North Carolina A&T State University Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr., has appointed Dr. Inez Tuck as dean of the School of Nursing, effective July 1. Tuck's appointment was confirmed during the regular meeting of the N.C. A&T Board of Trustees. She will replace Dr. Patricia Chamings, who served as interim dean.

"Dr. Tuck brings more than 30 years of experience in the field of higher education, where she has served as an administrator and professor," said Martin. "She is a scholarly, professional leader who has the vision, expertise and creativity to enhance our nursing program."

Tuck is a strong advocate for lifelong education, having obtained degrees in nursing, business and child development and family relations.

Prior to coming to A&T, Tuck held numerous positions in the School of Nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., from 1997 to present. She served as professor of nursing in the Department of Adult Health and Nursing Systems, professor and chair of the Department of Integrative Systems, associate professor, associate dean of doctoral programs, and research and associate dean of graduate programs, M.S. and Ph.D.

Tuck's career history also includes the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she served from 1990-1997, as an associate professor, coordinator of mental health concentration (graduate program), and director of the MSN Program. In addition, she was an associate professor and coordinator of student development in the Department of Nursing at North Carolina Central University from 1988-1990. Tuck also has taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina at Greensboro and A&T.

In February 2010, Tuck was appointed to the Project BeSTOW Advisory Board, Behavioral Science Unit, FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. During that same year, she was the recipient of the Rosemary Holden Kelso Fellowship for 2010 Harris Manchester Summer Research Institute at Oxford University.

A 1970 A&T nursing graduate, Tuck received her M.N. degree from the University of Florida in psychiatric/mental health nursing, Ph.D. in child development and family relations from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and M.B.A. from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in business administration.

THE SCHOOL OF NURSING OFFERS THE FOLLOWING OPTIONS

Students with a bachelor’s degree in something other than nursing, who still aspire to a nursing career, are invited to apply for the accelerated nursing program at NCAT School of Nursing.  Students must apply to the University (Undergraduate program) and apply to the School of Nursing.  Pre-requisites include:  Bachelor’s degree, at least a 3.0 grade point average from degree program, and the following courses (chemistry with lab, human nutrition, microbiology, general or abnormal psychology, human growth and development, human anatomy and physiology).

Application process will begin on May 4, 2011.  A minimum of 12 students may be accepted.  The program will offer 58 credit hours over a 12 month (1 calendar year) period.  Students will have 24-32 contact hours per week in a block style curriculum.  Three, one-week vacations are scheduled for the entire year.  Traditional academic vacations are NOT part of this curriculum.  The work and study will be very intense; therefore, students will be unable to work at a paid job during this year. We are excited about this opportunity for qualified students who look forward to a challenging career in nursing.

* The 2011 cohort is closed.

* 2012 Applications are being accepted, deadline Aug 1, 2011 5pm.

Thank you for your interest in the nursing program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T). The School of Nursing at NC A&T State University offers several programs for selected health care professionals to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN). We strive to make our programs accessible to working health professionals and to provide a supportive and caring environment. The goal of our BSN degree is to prepare a Registered Nurse (RN) with the ability to function as a professional nurse in various settings, provide exceptional leadership and managerial skills, use applied research in evidence-based practice, and prepare for graduate nursing education. Professionalism, including the aspects of compassion, dedication, volunteerism, ethical conduct, and scholarship, is emphasized.

All candidates complete the University admission process, and be admitted to NC A&T, before acceptance into a BSN completion program. Candidates must complete the undergraduate pre-requisite science and liberal arts studies as a foundation of our BSN. The BSN degree requires 128 semester hours for graduation, and 62 semester credit hours may be transferred from another academic institution and/or earned through College Level Proficiency Examinations (CLEP) (up to 15 credit hours). However, no more than 80 hours may be transferred from another institution. In addition, all completion students must take Nursing 390, Transition to Professional Nursing Practice.

You’re already an RN, so what's next? Many of us deal with this frustration at some point in our career and feel the need to bring more meaning into our lives. As an RN, you are already committed to an exciting and rewarding career but fell that something is missing, or maybe you want to do more to further assist others in contributing to their well being. Acquiring a BSN is the next step at obtaining those newly formed goals and aspirations you will seek to achieve. It is the beginning of a path to professional and/or advanced nursing.

The School of Nursing offers a learning environment that builds on prior knowledge and experience and prepares the student for an administrative nursing career.
A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree presents the opportunity for RN's to better apply their skills and creates multiple avenues and benefits in the unyielding use of their gift. With a BSN, RN's can further expand their nursing career, allowing them to become more marketable in this ever-changing job market. North Carolina A&T State University School of Nursing set up a foundation for each student to grow upon and take full advantage of every possibility available in the nursing field. This, in turn, allows the RN student to make use of their experience to its full potential, creating an even more promising outlook on the student's road to further success.
